Now Seeking Book Transporters!

LVNRV is in need of a few book transporters.

What is a book transporter? Book transporters are people with a truck/van/SUV/large car that help transport book donations to our storage facility. Usually we would be taking books from our offices (where people most often donate) to our storage facility.

But sometimes we may need someone to take books from other locations. Our offices are located in downtown Christiansburg, and our storage facility is over by the mall area. Ideally, sorters would need to be free during the day time when the office is open, but we may be willing to make after hours or weekend arrangements for willing volunteers.

Tutoring

Interested in tutoring? There is no better way to improve a community than by giving people the power to improve their future. Helping an adult learn to read and write- or to speak English- is a profound experience that will enrich not only your life, but your student’s life as well.

Tutors Must

• Be 18 years of age of older
• Have at least a high school diploma
• Be able to speak, read, and write the English language well enough to be able to communicate clearly
• Attend Tutor Training Sessions
• Pay a small onetime fee to cover training materials
• Commit to a year of tutoring. Generally once a week for two hours a week

Volunteering

Want to help, but can’t be a tutor? Don’t worry; there are many different volunteer opportunities at LVNRV.

Bookstore
We have a small bookstore located at our main offices. We need volunteers to:

• staff the store
• help customers
• sort books
• research the values of books
• help with online sales

Special Event Book Sales
We hold two special event book sales each year: our huge four-day books sale at the New River Valley Mall in February and our smaller one-day second chance sale. Help is needed year round for our book sales. We need volunteers to:

• sort through donated books -year round- click here for sorting dates
• transport books from our books store to our storage unit -year round-
• organize book drives -year round-
• help advertise at book sale time
• transport books to and from the sale locations to our storage facility
• help run the sales
• help set up and take down at the book sales

General Jobs
There are lots of other more general jobs that we need help with too!

• Help with our annual Scrabble Tournament (in October)
• Help with advertising, PR, and Outreach
• Write thank you letters to donors
• Help us raise money
• Provide technical and computer support to our office staff
• Office Cleaning
• Assist with tutor trainings
• Help with outreach to Pulaski, Floyd, and Giles Counties
