CALLING ALL WORD LOVERS!   The 2010 Scrabble Registrations forms are now available!  Come and have some fun!  Download here in either black or white or in color! A special thanks to Lois Stephens, a avid supporter of Literacy Volunteers and former board member. Thanks Lois for donating your special talents to LV-NRV!

The Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend Becky Moses; a current and long-time board member and avid supporter of Literacy Volunteers. Becky passed away suddenly Friday, July 23, 2010. She will be deeply missed. Becky was a resident of Giles County. We keep her husband Buddy and their family in our prayers, and our grateful for the donations we have received in Becky's honor.

Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley is a community-based literacy program that provides free one-to-one or small group tutoring (Basic Literacy, ESOL, Family Literacy) at a location and time that is convenient to both the learner and the student. We are a United Way/United Fund Partner Agency and an affiliate member of ProLiteracy.

Tutors and students collaborate together as a team sharing the decision making in all aspects of the learning process.

A learner-centered approach allows learners to set their own personal goals based on their everyday literacy needs, whether it is paying bills, filling out job applications, helping their child with homework, reading to their child/grandchildren, or to help teach the literacy skills needed to enter, and/or keep employment.

Our primary mission is to help adults that read below the fifth grade reading level. Our secondary mission is to help adults that cannot speak English. As funds allow, we serve families in need of literacy help through our family literacy program, and have a successful track record of working with area businesses in need of workplace literacy services for their low-literate employees. For costs and information on our workplace program, human resource managers can contact us at  lvnrv@verizon.net. We can provide on-site tutoring and/or redesign your workplace documents for a small fee.
