Thank you again to all of those that helped with the book sale. It was a great success despite being snowed in on Sunday. Even with the inclement weather cutting into sales, we were able to make just over $8,500 in sales. It was a huge undertaking, and we couldn’t have done it our did as well as we did do without all of the community support we received.

The New River Valley Planning District is conducting a survey of ALL NRV residents to assess the livability of our area. Please take a few minuted to submit your info!

LVNRV will have a booth inside the food court entrance and will be accepting used book donations. We take almost every type of book except for encyclopedias, national geographics, and reader’s digest condensed versions.

If you have a lot of books to donate, we SHOULD have someone available to help unload them from your car. To assist us with this, though, please pull your car up to the curb in front of the entrance.

Interested in volunteering at our annual used book sale?

Great! Because this year’s sale will be held February 16th (Thursday) through the 19th (Sunday) at the NRV Mall. Book Sale hours are 7am-9pm on Thursday through Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sunday.

We will need volunteers for the following times:

• Wednesday the 15th to set up the sale (9pm-on)
• Thursday through Sunday during regular Sale hours o work the sale.
• Sunday evening after the sale to pack up everything and move out (6pm-on)

There are several different job types available. They are listed below with a brief description as well as the times they will be needed.

Book Sale Set Up Crew:

We need volunteers to help us unpack boosk and set up for the sale. Set up starts at 9pm on Wednesday evening. Volunteers will be unpacking books from boxes and setting them out on the tables as well as conducting other general set up tasks. We will take as many people as want to help, it can be a lot of work, and the more people we have the faster it goes.

Floaters:

Floaters help out at the sale. Their primary functions are to fill in spots on the tables as people buy books and to make sure the tables are neat and there aren’t books falling over or piled up.

Front Area Helpers:

Font Area Helpers help out in the cashier area during the sale hours. They may bag books, help the cashier with sales, oversee the special collection books for sale up front, hand out info about LVNRV, etc.

Book Collectors:

Book Collectors are only needed on Sunday afternoon from 3pm until 6pm. LVNRV operates a small book store in our offices. As part of he mall sale we will be transferring a majority of our books from the store to the sale. So, we will need to bring back books from the sale to the store at the end of the sale. Therefore we need volunteers to comb through the books for sale and pick out books that they think would be good for the store. We will have a list of what types of books and how many are needed. These volunteers MAY also be asked to pick out books for other groups like the Juvenile Detention Center or the Christmas Store.

Clean Up and Pack Out:

We need volunteers to help pack up the books and clean up after the sale from 6pm on Sunday on. Task would involve putting books back into boxes and cleaning up after the sale.

As indicated above, you can SIGNUP to volunteer on our online sign up sheet. Just type your name in the box that correlates with what job and what time slots you want. If you would rather not have your name appear on a public sheet, please just include your initials and then in the contact info email (explained below) indicate that you have used your initials on the sheet.

Once you sign up PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL to lvnrvbooksale@gmail.com with the subject line “book sale volunteer contact info” and include in it your contact info (email and phone). That way if there is an emergency or bad weather we can contact you.

What is a book transporter? Book transporters are people with a truck/van/SUV/large car that help transport book donations to our storage facility.

Usually we would be taking books from our offices (where people most often donate) to our storage facility. But sometimes we may need someone to take books from other locations.

Our offices are located in downtown Christiansburg, and our storage facility is over by the mall area. Ideally, sorters would need to be free during the day time when the office is open, but we may be willing to make after hours or weekend arrangements for willing volunteers.

We are in need of used book donations or our upcoming Annual Used Book Sale fundraiser that is taking place February. We would be happy to take any books you have and don’t want or don’t have a need for any longer. We take just about everything (except for encyclopedias, national geographics, and reader’s digest condensed books) So if you have any old books or if you have friends/family that have old books please consider donating them to us. We can even give you a tax receipt for your donation.

Also, if you are feeling particularly energetic we welcome you to organize a book drive in your community,office, church, etc. If you can help out in this way please let us know ASAP.

Donating books is easy and you have several options:

1. bring them by our store (located in our offices). The store is generally open 9-5 M-F. But we do have a small staff and we do close the store if no one is here. So please call to make sure someone will be in when you are planning to bring books by here.
2. arrange to drop them off at our storage facility. It’s located over by the Mall. If you are interested in this option please call our offices to discuss.
3. If you live outside of Cburg, we have several drop off options throughout the valley (in general where our Board members are located). If you need information on these options, please call our offices.
4. We will also be having a book drive in the mall the week before the sale. The sale itself is February 16th through 19th, and the drive will be the Friday and Saturday before on the 10th (8am-7pm) and 11th (10am-3pm).

We need more tutors, especially people who would be available on weekday during the day. Tutoring Requirements are:

• Tutors must commit to a year of service, generally 50 weeks out of the year, tutoring once a week for about two hours a week
• Tutors must take a tutor training course given by LVNRV staff (small materials fee required)*
• Tutors must be at least 18 years old
• Tutors must have a High School Diploma or GED
