JOB TITLE: Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley Executive Director
REPORTS TO: LVNRV Board of Directors
SUPERVISES: Program Specialist & Volunteer Tudors
JOB BRIEF: Working under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director oversees all operations, functions and activities of Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley.
As the face of the organization, this position is responsible for developing a strategic direction and implementing a high quality vision. This position must have good communication skills, the ability to lead, motivate and have a holistic approach in managing the organization’s operations. This position is a part-time, 30 hours per week position. Pay range is $15-18 per hour depending on qualifications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement strategies to promote the organization’s mission and vision
Create complete plans for the attainment of goals and objectives set by the board of directors
Build an effective team by providing guidance and coaching to volunteer tutors and cultivating
Ensure the organization’s activities adhere to established policies and legal guidelines
Direct and oversee grant applications and fundraising efforts
Develop positive relationships with all stakeholders
Act as the public speaker and public relations representative of the organization in ways that
strengthen its profile
Work with Board Treasurer and Program Specialist to create reports which communicate the
organization’s financial position and progress toward program goals
Recruit and train volunteer tutors, providing ongoing instructional support and coaching
Recruit students and coordinate intake and assessment
Direct and oversee matching of learners and tutors
Devise remedial actions for any identified issues and conduct crisis management when
Occasional overnight travel required
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program
Experience as executive director or in other managerial position
Experience in education is preferred.
Experience in developing strategies and plans
Ability to apply successful fundraising and networking techniques
An analytical mind energized by creative problem solving
Outstanding organization and leadership abilities
Excellent communication, both oral and written, and public speaking skills
Leadership philosophy that makes the needs of others a priority and helps people develop and
perform to the best of their ability
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Grant writing skills and successful fund-raising ability.
Possess a valid Virginia driver's license.
Be able to pass a drug test and background check.

*Position is grant funded. Continuation of this position is contingent on LVNRV receiving renewed grant funding each project year. **Position includes 6 month probationary period.
