Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley – (LVNRV)

The Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley is a means for individuals, organizations, businesses, and governmental agencies to connect with providers of adult literacy tutoring services. We are an issue driven group and are only involved with literacy and literacy related issues. We provide tutoring in both basic literacy (reading and writing) and English as a second language (conversational and basic English skills) to adults in the New River Valley. We also promote public awareness, cooperative partnerships, information sharing and referrals between literacy programs and communities.

We provide free confidential tutoring for adults needing to improve literacy skills in one or more of the following areas of instruction:

• Reading
• Writing
• Conversational English

We use a learner centered tutoring approach that allows our learners to receive help towards their personal literacy goals such as getting a driver’s license; reading to their children; filling out forms from work; understanding and paying bills; reading the Bible; and much more.

Interested in joining our Volunteers? Our members come from all over the New River Valley Virginia. Members are from diverse programs that serve diverse constituencies. Individuals representing adult education, volunteer-based programs and community-based programs serve on our Board of Directors.

Our Mission

The Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley mission is to foster support, advocate for, and instruct adults in the New River Valley who seek opportunities to achieve greater independence through literacy.

We are a community-based literacy program that provides free one-to-one or small group tutoring (Basic Literacy, ESOL, Family Literacy) at a location and time that is convenient to both the learner and the student. We are a United Way/United Fund Partner Agency and an affiliate member of ProLiteracy.
